Luxury Trash
Will Spring 2012 see the well-heeled wearing discarded fish skins on their feet?  Marcia Patmos and Manolo Blahnik have teamed up to create the sustainable Marcia Patmos for Manolo Blahnik collection of shoes for the spring — made entirely of discarded tilapia skins, cork and raffia. This is the first eco-friendly endeavor for Blahnik, who has worked with Patmos on two styles, a double strap, open-toe flat and a strappy, high-heeled sandal in color combinations of electric blue, black, nude and yellow. Each creation will retail for $895 at Manolo Blahnik stores.

Eco Vision
Another eco first this coming Spring: sunglasses made from more than 50% natural & renewable materials. The Stella McCartney collection (Luxottica), features two types of eco-plastic. Bio-injected plastic, which is made from 54% castor oil seeds, that are grown using little water and pesticides. The other is a new acetate plastic that combines cellulose with “natural plasticizers” that are derived from citric acid. As for Ms McCartney, she refuses to be defined as an ‘eco-designer’ but rather considers herself to be ‘a luxury designer with sustainable convictions’.  Bravo.

Substance and Style
Fashion label Edun was founded by Ali Hewson & Bono, with a mission to develop trade with Africa. And a vision to be a global fashion brand. The fact that LVMH have a 49% stake in Edun, means they’ve got the potential to do both. They are unashamedly a for-profit business and the campaign for their Fall/Winter 2011 Menswear Collection features 12 stylish men talking about their community projects. Reinforcing the brand’s belief that style should have substance…watch the Pioneers Project video here.

Democratic Fashion

For the second year running, Italian department store COIN, are offering iconic limited edition garments at a democratic price.  5,000 Democratic by Napapijri padded jackets will go on sale in a selection of Coin stores at the unique price of 10 Euros. Proceeds will go to the Green Cross Italia “Inizia da te” (“It starts with you”) project, founded by Mikhail Gorbachev to promote sustainable development.

Urban Luxury
Cadillac’s new concept car: Urban Luxury is a departure from conventional car design. With scissor-type doors that extend outward and rotate forward, giving equal access to all seats, the interior is trimmed in exquisite materials and features next-generation interactive technology. Touch-pad screens and projected readouts replace the more traditional gauges. And yes, it will be a hybrid; boasting a turbocharged 1.0L three-cylinder engine employing electric assist technology, engine start-stop function, brake energy regeneration and a dry dual-clutch transmission. Let’s just hope they’ve thought of house-hold garages with low ceilings otherwise opening the car door could be tricky.
