International Women’s Doodle

Oh, Google. We do love when our mornings are brightened by a smart Google Doodle. We loved playing Pac Man all day, the robot that moved was amazing, and the picture for Mary Shelley’s birthday was creepily brilliant.  But this morning’s doodle did not make us smile.

International Women’s Day Google Doodle

It is March 8th. The 101st International Women’s Day. A day to celebrate and fight to protect the economic, political and social rights and achievements of women. The UN’s official theme this year is – “Empower Women – End Hunger and Poverty.” But from Google we just got patronising fluff. Girly colours, child-like geometric shapes that appear to be drawn with colouring pencils, and even a little yellow flower.

We’d love to have seen a bold interpretation of political struggle, an homage to a particularly impressive female, a montage of women’s creations, even a nod to the day’s Soviet Socialist roots. We’d rather have seen gritty than pretty.
